Maria's story

Updated: Jan 12

Hi, my name is Maria. I am a 15-year-old girl who loves to spend time with my friends and family, go to the beach, and dance. I also have scoliosis. Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. I was diagnosed in late 2017, when I was 11 years old. It started when my dance teacher told my parents that my body was severely uneven. Constantly wearing little to no clothing at practice and on stage, it was very noticeable. We decided to get it checked and it turned out I had an “s” curvature in my spine. However, I am thankful to say that I am luckier than others with this condition. If my lower curvature was .5° more, I would’ve had to get surgery, and metal rods placed in my spine. Since I was still young and my bones were soft, instead I had to wear a back brace until late 2020 and I also had to do physical therapy. Now, I do not have to wear my brace, but my scoliosis is not completely cured. This affects my day to day life with constant back pain. As a competitive dancer, this also has a toll on me because some moves cause too much pain for me to do. I also still do have an uneven body and I get insecure about it. I wanted to share my experience so others with this condition do not feel alone. Everyone needs to know that no matter what they are going through there is someone who will understand you and help you💖
